Yesterday we had our annual Meet the Teacher day at school. The kids (and let's be honest, me included) were a mix of nervous excitement. Both of them complained of stomachaches a few hours before we left and hardly ate any lunch (so unusual for my kids!). While we've had an amazing summer I think we are all feeling ready for a bit more structure. But, with that comes new teachers, friends, routines, schedules, homework and change. Especially for our newest kindergartner.
But at the end of the day I'd say it was a success. The kids saw old friends, met a few new ones, found their desks and cubbies and overall felt much more excited about the coming weeks ahead.
Carter will be in 2nd grade with a teacher who lives in our neighborhood. I am so excited about this because she is fantastic, has many years of experience and really loves and values parent involvement. I can't wait to have the opportunity to be in his classroom more this year and help out with new projects. While he doesn't have many close friends in his class he's excited to make new ones and even chose the desk front and center of the classroom so he could focus on learning. Love my 2nd grader!
And Lucy...oh sweet Lucy. I think I've been purposely blocking it out in my head that she is starting school so I wouldn't have to cope with the thought of her being gone all day. She is so ready for kindergarten but I'm just not ready to have her away from me all.day.long. Carter did half day which was a perfect fit for him and it's not an option anymore. I don't think we would have chosen it even if it was because Lucy is so eager and ready to learn more but gosh I'm going to miss this girl. She was excited to see her classroom but then completely froze when her teacher came up and introduced herself. Total deer in headlights, no talking, no breathing, just a blank stare. Ha! Afterwards she said she loved it so I'm sure she'll settle right in as the school year begins.
I'm really looking forward to these walks to school most mornings. We have a bus option but since start times have shifted later we'll have more than enough time to walk. And it's these times that the kids really open up and share how things are going. Plus Simon and I can stop at the park on the way home for some playtime. Win win for everyone!
All settled in at their desks. Only a few days of summer left, happy school year!!!
